Perfect Your Outdoor Design with These 7 Small Balcony Tips

Posted on September 16, 2024 By Fiona Bornhöft No Comments on Perfect Your Outdoor Design with These 7 Small Balcony Tips

Recently, many of us have developed a newfound appreciation for spending time outdoors, surrounded by nature. Whether it’s a small balcony where you can unwind during the warm weather or a luxurious outdoor space in a big-city apartment, being outside is a sought-after amenity. You may have a book in hand or simply soak up the fresh air and sunlight. If you’re fortunate enough to have access to such a space, check out our tips for some inspiration on how to make the most of it.

Before delving into different design strategies, it’s important to address two common mistakes people make with small balconies. Some tend to overcrowd the space, attempting to fit a table, chairs, lounger, and lots of plants into a tiny area that’s only 50 or 60 square feet. On the other hand, some leave their balcony completely untouched. The former can result in a cluttered mess, while the latter means missing out on the opportunity to create a space you can truly enjoy. Take a look at our suggestions below to make the most of your balcony.

1. Look up!

If you have limited space to work with, consider utilizing vertical space. Instead of traditional planters that sit on the balcony floor, opt for shelves to create an improvised vertical garden. This allows you to maximize the greenery in your space and create a lush environment with limited square footage.

Even if your balcony isn’t as big or beautiful as those in the New Orleans French Quarter, you can still take inspiration from these picturesque hanging baskets.

2. Know when to fold ‘em

Having somewhere to sit is crucial for enjoying your balcony. But if you also want to use the space for activities like yoga or drying clothes, consider using flexible, folding furniture. These pieces can be easily stowed away when not in use, saving space and allowing for versatility in how you use your balcony.
